Modern Town

Taumarunui is the largest town in the Ruapehu District.
 

It is a rural service and shopping centre.  It has a comprehensive range of services and shops and a good choice of accommodation, from camping grounds to Motor Lodges with conference facilities.

Sporting Facilities
An outdoor swimming pool, squash courts, tennis courts, netball courts, croquet, bowling greens, rugby grounds, gymnasium, Go Kart Track, BMX Track, soccer fields, hockey fields, polo Crosse grounds, rifle range, black powder shooting range, archery range.
Clubs and Organisations
Bridge, Theatre, Choral and Opera, Country Music, Darts, Indoor Bowls, Senior Citizens, and many more.

Sixteen Primary Schools in the town and surrounding areas.
Taumarunui High School.  A state co-educational secondary school.  The school currently caters for 582 students including 46 boarders that live at a weekday hostel on the school grounds.  The school has large sports fields including netball/ tennis and hockey courts, a gymnasium, and a covered, heated swimming pool.
