Nau mai, haere mai ki Taumarunui!

Greetings, welcome to Taumarunui!

Taumarunui is a rural town located centrally in the North Island of New Zealand.  Taumarunui's population according to the 2001 Census was 5136.  The main ethnic groups are those of European descent and those of Maori descent.

Taumarunui is situated in the King Country, in the Ruapehu District, at the meeting of the Wanganui, New Zealand's largest navigable river, and the Ongarue Rivers.  It is on State Highway 4, and the North Island Main Trunk Railway Line between Auckland and Wellington.

Taumarunui is settled mostly on a river flat in a valley, surrounded by hilly farmland; mostly sheep, cattle and deer farms.  Its economy is based on farming and forestry, and more recently it has gained importance as a tourism centre.  This is largely owing to the many activities available in the temperate climate, and the town's close proximity to the awesome natural attractions of the Tongariro and Whanganui National Parks, the Pureora Forest Park and the Wanganui River and tributaries.
